Lowertown

I Don’t Know Man, They’re Weird, But I Think They’re Good

Bedroom-pop duo Lowertown consist of one Olivia O. and Avshalom Weinberg, two high school friends now a couple mini-albums and a full length into their creative partnership as Lowertown. Plus a new single “Root Canal” that just dropped on October 18, 2023.

Quick aside necessary to just concentrate on how hardcore the name Avshalom Weinberg is. L’chaim, am I right, boys?

The duo self-record and produce their tracks themselves, as both members have done in their own solo projects going back to their high school days. Their genre lives primarily in the folk-rinsed, avant-garde of the gen Z bedroom pop algonquin roundtable that’s sprouted from the online indie underground in the 2010s-2020s.

Their best work doesn’t dance as cute-drunkenly as songs of theirs like “The Gaping Mouth” from the 2021 album of the same name, but keeps a tighter rhythm and songwriting structure. 2022’s single “Bucktooth” is a delightfully weird example of this, while “Best Person You Know” might be the quintessential Lowertown song I would use to introduce new listeners to the band. Intriguing, stripped back, just a little off-kilter.

Now, keep in mind these kids are weird.

But just remember kids, it’s not wrong to be weird…unless your music is bad.
